Mangalore, April 11, 2012: A powerful earthquake of 8.9 magnitude hit the western coast of northern Sumatra on Wednesday. The quake was felt across the Indian Ocean. A tsunami warning has been officially issued in Indonesia, say reports.
TV reports say the tremors were also felt in Chennai, Ooty, Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata; however, the intensity was not known as yet in the eastern coast of the country.
Pacific Tsunami Watch Center has initiated Indian Ocean wide Tsunami watch.
India also has issued tsunami warning for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands following the quake.
