Sumith had given a cheque for Rs. 90,000 to a person in Thane in Maharashtra, but the bank dishonored the cheque owing to lack of funds in his account. The victim lodged a complaint at the Thane Police Station. Although Sumith was asked to appear in court, he did not do so, following which an arrest warrant was issued for him. The Thane police sought the assistance of the Pandeshwar police to track and arrest Sumith Raj.

After producing him in court on Oct 2, the Pandeshwar police handed him over to the Thane police.

Police investigations revealed that Sumith Raj ran an illegal chit fund business, through which he collected lots of money from the local people, promising them higher rates of interest. Although he initially paid them interest, he later cheated his investors and did not return their money.

Some of his victims had lodged complaints against him at the Pandeshwar Police Station, but Sumith Raj had filed counter cases against them. In one case, he had argued with one of his investors outside the police station. The furious investor physically assaulted Sumith, for which the police arrested them while Sumith went scot free. Sumith was notorious for not only cheating people of their money, but also putting them in trouble.
