The temple priest noticed that valuable ornaments were missing when he arrived in the morning to perform the morning pooja. The thieves had broken open the lock of the main door as well as that of the sanctum sanctorum. The pooja items inside the sanctum sanctorum were in a disorderly condition.

Three silver aureoles belonging to the idol as well as a golden flute, which was in the idol’s hand, have been stolen. Silver ornaments worth 10 kgs have also been stolen.

According to police sources, the thieves had broken open the front door last night. They had closed the front door from inside the temple and had escaped from the back door with the ornaments.

The temple belongs to a family of Gowda Saraswat Brahmins. The ornaments and items of worship inside the temple are antiques and, therefore, extremely valuable.

A case has been registered at the Mangalore North Police Station. Currently, Amit Singh, the assistant superintendent of police, and Inspector Vinay Gaonkar are investigating the case.
