Netravathi River diversion will do irreversible damage: Subrahmanya seer

 Subrahmanya, Dec 5, 2013: The natural resources which we enjoy are God given gift and we have no right to  take nature for granted and  take up  catastrophic projects like river diversion, said Sri Vidya Prasanna Theertha Swamiji of Subrahmanya Mutt.

 

He was  speaking at the valedictory of a Environment Awareness jatha organised by the Kumaradhara Parisara Samrakshana Samithi here on December 4, Wednesday. Continuing, the seer said unscientific projects will do irreversible damage to nature and affect man to a great extent. There is a dire need for the people to unite against projects like river diversion, he said.

Prof. Kumaraswamy who also spoke on the occasion described as unscientific the very idea that the excess rain water that joins the sea from Netravathi  river  can be diverted towards  those regions which have an acute shortage of drinking water.

Dr Ramachandran of the Indian Institute of Science said the proposed Urumbi hydel project would do more harm than good.   Ananth Hegde Ashisara, former president of Western Ghat Task Force, Krishnaprasad Madtila, President of the Subrahmanya Temple Management Board, Srinivas Rao, Advocate, Karunaker Gogate, President of the Parisara Samrakshana Samithi and others were present.

The jatha which began at Urumbi   passed through  Padavu,  Kutruppady, Kadaba and Charvaka before concluding at Subrahmanya where Baagina was offered to River Kumaradhara.
