Mangalore, May 17, 2012: Navya R. Shetty, a student of SVS English Medium School in Vidyagiri, Bantwal, has won the first rank in the SSLC exams in Karnataka. Her total score is 623 over 625.

Navya is the daughter of Rathnakar Shetty, a commerce lecturer in Government College, Malleshwar, and Prabha R. Shetty, a homemaker. The family hails from Hebri and is currently in Bangalore. Her overjoyed father said that his daughter believes her parents, teachers, and friends as responsible for her success. He also said that there are several capable students all over the state.

Speaking to reporters, Navya said that she never expected to be the state topper. She said that her father first got the good news from their neighbor in Bantwal and later they watched the news on TV. Navya has scored 100 percent in all subjects except English and Hindi, where she scored 99 each.

Navya said that her goal was to score above 600, adding that she never expected to be the state topper. Speaking about her plans for the future, she said that she has not yet decided, but might take up engineering or teaching.

Another Mangalorean, Pallavi Rao K. of Suratkal shares the second rank in the SSLC exams with two other students. Her total score is 621 over 625. Pallavi is a student of Vidyadayini English Medium School in Suratkal and the daughter of K. Manjunath Rao and Bhuvaneshwari. Pallavi has scored 124 in Sanskrit, 99 in English, 98 in Kannada, 100 in social studies, 100 in science, and 100 in mathematics.

Interacting with reporters, Pallavi said that she was happy to see her results. She said that she used to study for 4 hours everyday and for 6 hours during the exam season. Stating that she practices yoga and meditation, which has helped her in her studies, she said that her friends, teachers, and parents are also responsible for her success.


Girls outperformed boys

 

Girls outperformed boys in the SSLC examinations held in April this year in Karnataka with a pass percentage of 84.58 against 80.03. The overall pass percentage was 82.26. As many as 7,31,991 candidates appeared for the examination, of which 6,02,147 passed, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwar Bhat Kageri told reporters in Bangalore today.

Udupi district stood first with 89.53 pass percentage, followed by Sirsi with 88.31. Hassan was in third spot with 85.92 pass percentage and Bidar last with 63.32 pass percentage, he said.

Students in Scheduled Tribe category (75.49 per cent) did better than Scheduled Caste students, who recorded a pass percentage of 72.64 per cent, Kageri informed.

As much as 77.07 per cent of the candidates from government schools passed, while 85.46 per cent of candidates from unaided private schools passed in the examination, he added. In all, 132 candidates were debarred for malpractices, Kageri said adding that SSLC supplementary examinations would be held from June 18, 2012.

He also advised failed candidates, who apply for retotalling or photocopies to enroll in the supplementary exam before the last date of submission, without waiting for the result.
A total of 47 schools recorded zero percentage and there were no government schools in it, he said.

Kegeri announced distribution of three computers for three students securing the highest marks in each taluk.
