National-level chess championship inaugurated in Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 17, 2011 : The Chess Association inaugurated the Under 10 and Under 14 boys and girls national-level chess championship at Lobo’s Riverview on Oct 16 Sunday, with Derik Pinto, the president of the Karnataka State Chess Association playing a game against Arjun Adappa, the chess prodigy of Mangalore.

Mahesh Ved, the vice president of the Chess Association of India, and Navin Shetty, the president of the Mangalore Basketball Club, were the chief guests of the event. CAI Joint Secretary Prasanna Rao presided over the event. Ian Lobo of Lobo’s Riverside and Chandrashekar Bhandary were present.

Over 140 players are participating in this championship, which is actually the second edition. The Boys category will have 8 rounds and the Girls category will have 7 rounds in the format of the Swiss League.

The prize pool is worth Rs. 3 lakh.
