Udupi, Jan 15, 2012: The Mooru Theru, which can be roughly translated into English as Three Chariot Festival, was held as part of a larger six-day festival called Sapthotsava, on the day of Makara Sankranthi at Shri Krishna Mutt on Jan 14 Saturday.

History says that, on the day of Makara Sankranthi, Madhwacharya, the exponent of the Dwaita philosophy, installed a beautiful statue of Lord Krishna in Udupi nearly eight centuries back. The Sapthotsava is held in commemoration of this event.

The three chariots were drawn under the guidance of Shiroor Mutt Seer Shri Laxmivara Teertha Swamiji. The devotees who were drawing the chariots chanted the various names of Lord Krishna.

It is generally believed that those who view this event can easily get rid of their sins.
