Moodbidri: Locals block highway with soil over rising accidents, allege unsafe roadwork

Moodbidri, Apr 14, 2026: Amid a rise in accidents, local residents on Monday staged a protest by dumping soil on the Alangaru–Karkala stretch of the national highway, blocking vehicular movement.

Frequent accidents have been reported on this ring road stretch, where highway construction is currently underway. Residents have pointed out a serious lack of safety measures in the area. In the past few days alone, multiple accidents have claimed several lives. On Monday as well, a car met with an accident, leaving its occupants injured.

Alleging that authorities failed to respond to repeated public appeals, angry villagers brought in soil using tipper trucks and dumped it across the highway. They protested against what they described as unscientific and unsafe roadwork by the highway authorities.

The protesters said that such demonstrations were necessary to draw the attention of officials. They urged the authorities to take immediate action and implement proper safety measures to prevent further accidents in the future.
