Meeting to discuss UPCL issue cancelled, furious farmers protest

Udupi, Oct 17, 2011: The furious members of the Raitha Sangha organized a protest in front of the DC’s office today because the expert committee meeting, scheduled to discuss UPCL problems today, was cancelled. 

The angry farmers stormed inside the premises of the DC’s office and staged a protest because the DC refused to come out and explain the reasons for the cancellation of the meeting. 

Although the police intervened and requested two representatives to go inside and speak to the DC, the protestors refused saying that the UPCL is creating problems for everybody in Udupi and that the DC must come out and explain why the meeting has been cancelled. 

Finally, DC Dr. M. T. Reju came out and addressed the furious farmers. He said that the meeting will be definitely held before Oct 31. Although they quietened down, they demanded the shutting down of the UPCL till the government solves their problems. 

Vijay Hegde, Madhav Shetty, and Shashidhar Shetty were among those who protested.
