Mangaluru, Nov 2, 2026: Following the directions of the Health Minister, food safety officials inspected ice manufacturing units across Dakshina Kannada district to ensure the quality and safety of ice used for preserving fresh fish.

During the inspections at the Mangaluru Harbour fishing jetty, officials collected ice samples from various manufacturing units. They found that the units were procuring fresh water through tankers for ice production. The operators were directed to obtain laboratory reports confirming water quality before using it for manufacturing ice.

An ice manufacturing unit run by the Mangaluru Trawl Boat Fishermen’s Primary Cooperative Society was also inspected. Officials noted that the unit was equipped with modern machinery. Samples of the water used for ice production were collected and sent for laboratory testing.

The District Food Safety and Drug Administration Department has instructed all ice manufacturing units to use only good-quality water for producing ice meant for fish preservation. It emphasised that clean and hygienically prepared ice is essential to maintain the freshness and quality of fish.

The department also issued a strict warning against the use of formalin or any other chemicals to preserve fish.
