Under the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services, the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO)–Jeevan Saathkate Institution is functioning, and as of July 30, 43,221 individuals across the state have pledged to donate their organs. The Mangaluru zone (comprising Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Davangere, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga) ranks fourth in the state.
Between 2017 and June 30, 2025, a total of 979 organ donations have been recorded in Karnataka. The donated organs include 1,481 kidneys, 812 livers, 251 hearts, 25 kidney-pancreas combinations, 11 small intestines, 129 lungs, 44 liver-kidney combinations, 396 heart valves, 1,494 corneas, 106 skin donations, and 2 hands. In the Mangaluru zone alone, 141 organ donations have been recorded since 2019.
Organs from brain-dead individuals are retrieved at Non-Transplant Organ Retrieval Centers (NTORC) in government medical colleges and district hospitals, including Trauma Care and Emergency Centers, and are transported to transplant centers via green corridors. Every district hospital and medical college will have an NTORC. Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru is already registered as an NTORC and has carried out organ donations, he added.
