Mangaluru, April 21, 2026: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Fr. Muller Medical College Hospital successfully performed a rare and complex coronary angioplasty, saving the life of a 46-year-old high-risk cardiac patient from Kasaragod district in Kerala.
The patient had approached the hospital with severe breathing difficulty, fatigue, and weakness that limited her daily activities. She was examined by Chief Interventional Cardiologist Dr. H. Prabhakar, who diagnosed her with Takayasu arteritis—a rare condition in which both major arteries supplying blood to the heart were blocked, severely affecting cardiac function. Her condition was critical, and surgical risks were extremely high.
Taking swift action, Dr. Prabhakar admitted the patient for emergency care and led a multidisciplinary cardiac team comprising Dr. Pradeep Pereira, Dr. Jostal Pinto, and Dr. Ashoka. The team carefully planned and executed a complex angioplasty using advanced imaging techniques and specialised cutting balloon technology.
Given the patient’s fragile condition, the procedure was carried out in two stages over separate days. The intervention successfully restored normal blood flow to the heart, marking a significant breakthrough in treating such high-risk cases.
The patient responded well to the treatment, made a full recovery, and was discharged after post-operative monitoring. She is now leading a normal and healthy life.
Speaking on the achievement, Dr. Prabhakar said advancements in medical technology have enabled doctors to treat high-risk patients with improved precision and safety.
Director of Fr. Muller Institutions, Rev. Fr. Fausine Lucas Lobo, congratulated the medical team for their exceptional accomplishment.
