Mangaluru, Oct 11, 2025: District-in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced that a master plan has been prepared to develop a 24-metre-wide coastal road from Someshwar to Sasihitlu. He said the upcoming Mangaluru IT Park, recently approved by the state cabinet, will be a game-changer for coastal tourism.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with senior officials of the Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and the Mangaluru City Corporation, the minister said the coastal stretch will be developed as a waterfront tourism corridor, which will significantly boost tourism in the region.
He added that another waterfront road project has been proposed near Kannur and will be included in the master plan to improve connectivity and ease access to the city. The minister said public objections and suggestions on the master plan will be invited, and necessary steps will be taken with in the next two months.
MUDA residential layout
Under MUDA limits, new residential layouts are being developed at Konaje, Kunjathbail, and Chelyaru. The minister instructed officials to complete the Konaje layout work by November and open it for public purchase. Only about 20% of the plots have been booked so far, and completion of the work is expected to accelerate sales. The revenue from this project will be used to fund other residential layouts, he said.
Gundu Rao noted that there are issues with the Kunjathbail layout due to high land purchase costs, making it a potentially loss-making project. He directed officials to arrive at a clear decision to minimize financial losses. Meanwhile, the Chelyaru housing project requires additional funds, which, he said, could be sourced from the revenue generated through the Konaje layout once it is completed.
The minister added that progress on these projects will be reviewed again in November.
