Mangalore, Nov 23, 2012: The departments of mass communication and journalism (MCJ) and master of social work (MSW) of Mangalore University organized a blood donation camp in collaboration with the Lions, Lioness, and Leo Club of Mangalagangothri and Indian Red Cross Society of India on the university campus today.

Dr. Shantharam Shetty M., pro chancellor of Nitte University, addressed the gathering and said that the act of donating blood is the greatest as it can save lives. Sharing his experiences as a surgeon, he said that he has faced a number of problems because of shortage of blood in emergency cases. Urging young people to donate blood, he said that the right time to donate blood is when one is young. He also expressed his appreciation of the university for organizing a blood donation camp.
Revealing statistics related to blood requirement in the country, Lion M. B. Sadashiv said that the country needs 10 million units of blood, but has only 5 million units.
Prof. T. C. Shivashankar Murthy, vice chancellor of Mangalore University, also addressed the gathering.
Dr. G. P. Shivram of MCJ Department delivered the welcome address and Dr. Mohan S. Singe of the MSW Department proposed the vote of thanks.
A large number of students, members of various organizations, and faculty members donated blood after the formal stage event.
The university also formed its own Blood Donors’ Group on this occasion.
