Kundapur, Dec 5, 2013 : In a tragic incident reported from Navunda near Byndoor on December 4, Wednesday, a young girl has ended her life by hanging herself after her mother reprimanded her for remaining glued to TV rather than concentrating on her studies.
The deceased is Deepa Shetty (21), daughter of Prabhaker Shetty and Hema Shetty couple. She was a second B.Com student of the Richard Almeida College at Navunda.
Sources said Deepa who was enjoying her vacation used to remain glued to the TV even as her mother repeatedly asked her to devote some time to studies too.
Frustrated over her mother’s reprimand, Deepa who was a stubbon girl, had reportedly locked herself up in her room. Her family did not take this seriously as she often did so. However, when she did not open the door for long, her parents grew suspicious and peeped through the window only to be shocked to see her hanging from the ceiling fan using her dupatta.
The door was then broken open by neighbours. The local police were also informed. Deepa was the youngest of the three children of her parents. If her brother was mentally retarded, an elder sister was a teacher in a local school.

The use of the term "mentally retarded" is considered insensitive and unparliamentary. Instead, the term "mentally challenged" could have been used, if at all it was necessary to highlight the condition. Even the sentence- "If her brother was mentally retarded, an elder sister was a teacher in a local school." needs proper editing. |
