Udupi, Aug 27, 2012: Udupi District-in-charge Minister Kota Shrinivas Poojary urged minorities to grab government facilities meant for them. Delivering the inaugural address after inaugurating the loan disbursement program held by the State Minorities Development Corporation, he said that loans worth Rs. 267 crores were distributed among beneficiaries from minority communities on August 27, Monday.
N. B. Aboobakker, chairman of the Minorities Development Corporation, said before distributing cheques that economic and educational empowerment of minorities is essential for the development of the country.
Speaking about government facilities for the minorities, he said that the government has been providing maximum support to minorities for the past 4 – 5 years. The state of Karnataka is not only giving away a number of loans, but also enjoys an excellent recovery rate.
He further said that Udupi stands second and DK stands fourth in the state as far as loan recovery is concerned.
The Karnataka Minorities Development Limited, which was launched on Feb 7, 1986, works for the empowerment of religious minorities such as Muslims, Christians, Jains, Paris, Sikhs, and Buddhists.
According to the census of 2001, the total population of minorities in Karnataka is 82, 93,576.
Loans were disbursed under the following schemes.
•‘Swavalambana’ Margin Money Loan Scheme: Up to Rs 1 lakh - Nigam will pay Rs. 25,000 and the bank will pay the rest. Subsidy will be 5%. Next year, this will be increased to Rs. 5 lakh.
•Subsidy Scheme
•‘Arivu’ (Education Loan) Scheme provides Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 50,000 for 45,000 beneficiaries, making a total of Rs. 81.40 lakh for professional courses.
•Ganga Kalyana Scheme under which 5671 bore wells have been constructed.
