Karkala: Teen dies by suicide after family denies him new mobile phone

Karkala, Nov 15, 2025: A student died by suicide by jumping into a stone quarry pond after his family refused to buy him a new mobile phone. The incident occurred at Kodsarabettu in Nandalike village.

The deceased has been identified as Sumanth Devadiga (16), son of Surekha from Nandalike. Sumanth was a first-year PUC student at Nitte College. On the evening of November 12, he argued with his mother demanding a new mobile phone and left home after the quarrel, following which he went missing.

During the search, his body was found on the afternoon of November 13 in the stagnant water of the stone quarry at Kodsarabettu. It is believed that he jumped into the quarry water in anger after being denied a mobile phone.

A case has been registered at the Karkala Rural Police Station.
