KSRTC employees’ strike turns chaotic

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Sep 14, 2012: The KSRTC employees’ strike, which was so far peaceful, turned violent when some employees began protesting against a private bus, which had tried to enter a KRSTC bus stand on September 14, Friday.

When the situation turned violent, the police began using their lathis to disperse the crowd.

Although the employees alleged that the private bus had entered the KSRTC bus stand, eyewitnesses say that the bus had not entered the bus stand to receive passengers or park, but only to take a turn.

The protestors wrongly assumed that the driver intended to pick up passengers and tried to stop the bus. Immediately, the situation turned chaotic and the police had to intervene.

Although the situation is now normal, the police have beefed up security at the KSRTC bus stand.

Since the KSRTC Employees’ Union has called for a statewide strike, KSRTC employees in Mangalore are supporting it. The employees have demanded a 30 percent hike in their salaries and have threatened to continue the strike till the government agrees to their terms.
