Mangalore, Nov 25, 2011: The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) organized a protest in front of the DC’s office on Nov 25 Friday against Bal Thackeray, the Shiv Sena chief, for making an objectionable remark against Chandrashekar Kambara, Jnanapith award winner and Kannada writer.
In his protest address, Dr. Annayya Kulal, the honorary president of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, said that Chandrashekar Kambara is a senior writer and that the statement he made regarding the Marathi-speaking population in India was not meant to hurt anyone. He had also urged the people of Belgaum to rename it as Belagavi simply because he loves Kannada. He also said that the writer’s speech does not give Bal Thackeray any excuse to make loose statements against a Jnanapith award winner.
He said that Thackeray’s statement, made on behalf of the 8 crore Marathi-speaking people in Maharashtra, that the Jnanapith Award Committee should withdraw the award from Kambara should be condemned because Thackeray has no right to issue directives to a committee that confers awards on people based on their worth.
Criticizing Bal Thackeray for stating that Kambara should be physically assaulted, Kulal said that Thackeray will not dare touch Kambara. He said that the Kannada speaking people will organize a special event in honor of Kambara and challenged Thackeray to stop it if he dares.
The protestors burned an effigy of Bal Thackeray and shouted slogans against him.
Jayaprakash Shetty, the district president of KRV, George P. V., the working president, as well as Ravi Shetty Madoor, Chandrahas Rai Pilar, and Farooq Kinya also participated in this protest.
