Mangaluru, Aug 21, 2023: A huge protest was held at Kadri Grounds on August 20, Sunday under the aegis of Sowjanya Horata Samithi demanding justice to Sowjanya who was raped and murdered near Dharmasthala eleven years ago.
The protestors took out a padayatra from Kadri Manjunatha Temple to the grounds where a public meeting was held. They also warned of boycotting elections if the politicians fail to provide justice in the case and only involve in mud-slinging.
Mahesh Shetty Thimarody who is spearheading the protest urged all elected representatives to pressurize the government to order a fresh probe into the case. He said there is no scope to silence those who seek justice. Stating that they have been fighting for justice peacefully since the past 11 years, he said another massive protest will be held in Belthangady on September 3 in order to pressurize the government, elected representatives in this case.
The real culprits in the Sowjanya case are still at large, he said and urged the government to ensure justice in the case. “Home Minister Parameshwar has said that the Sowjanya case is a closed chapter. But he will know about her movement when we picket his house,” warned Thimaroady.
Activist Prasanna Ravi in her address too urged all elected representatives irrespective of party affiliations to appeal to the Chief Minister, Home Minister, Prime Minister and the President of India for justice in the case. People must boycott elections if justice is not done, she said.
Sowjanya’s mother Kusumavathi Gowda who spoke on the occasion said her family has been fighting for justice for 11 years. Seeing people’s support has increased her confidence of getting justice, she said.
College students also launched a Twitter campaign seeking justice in the case.
Kadri Jogi Mutt’s Nirmalanathji earlier inaugurated the programme.
