Homestay attack : Juvenile accused gets bail

Mangalore, April 11, 2013: 17 year old Punith who was arrested as an accused in the homestay attack case, was granted bail by a court in Mangalore on Wednesday.

Puneeth has been behind bars in the Mangalore jail along with other under trials though he was a juvenile as per the law of the land.  As per Punith’s SSLC certificate, his date of birth was  25-9-1995 and as a minor his case was to be tried by the Juvenile Justice Board.

Asha Nayak, Chairperson of CWC says  the lodging of Punith in the district prison along with adult under trials was a violation of civil rights. She said the family of Punith had approached the CWC about a month ago and added that a letter written by his minor sister was then forwarded to the District and Sessions Judge.

She said the CWC after ascertaining that the SSLC document of Punith was genuine  had filed an application for bail. She also observed that the police  prior to imprisoning Punith should have checked the details.
