Mangalore, Jan 1, 2013: As a part of annual Urulu Seve, former Union Minister, senior politician and the rallying force behind the renovation of the Shree Gokarnanatha Temple at Kudroli, B Janardhan Poojary honoured a 76 year widow Anasuya Kumari, a retired teacher, belonging to backward Community at the Temple on January 1, Tuesday.

During the occasion, Anasuya was taken to the temple in a grand procession. After performing the Chandika Homa, Poojary washed the feet of Anasuya and honoured her with Jasmine garland, saree, and fruits.

Later, many widows pulled the silver chariot around the temple and Poojary with other members participated in the Urulu Seve.

Speaking on the occasion, Poojary said that women were subject to a great deal of atrocities in India in the recent time. “A nation which was treating women as Goddess and Mother was now hurting the feelings of women,” he said.

Recalling the recent rape and death of 23 old Damini and Belthangady’s Sowjanya, he said that the temple has offered pooja for the soul of both victims.

He said that Anasuya has served as a teacher for nearly 35 years and this service has to be recognized. He said the ritual of Pada Puja has been performed with respect of ‘Guru Devo Bhava’.

Commending the protests staged by students demanding justice to the Delhi gang rape victim and Sowjanya, Poojari also called upon students to treat female students with respect. Poojari also demanded a ban on both Made Snana as well as Ede Snana and said if Made Snana was unhygienic, Ede Snana was an insult to the Naivedya offered to the deity.

Five kgs of rice each was distributed to 5,000 women in the temple, in the name of Damini.
