Gundya, May 27, 2026: A woman was killed on the spot and seven others were injured in a horrific road accident that occurred on the evening of May 25 at the Kenjala curve on the Gundya–Subrahmanya State Highway.

The accident took place following a head-on collision between a tempo traveller carrying pilgrims returning to Bengaluru after visiting the Subrahmanya temple and a KSRTC bus travelling from Dharmasthala towards Subrahmanya.

Accident

According to reports, the tempo traveller, driven by Sanju V. of Devanahalli Kote in Bengaluru, was carrying 14 passengers. The KSRTC bus coming from Dharmasthala was being driven by Shet Mallika Madras. The collision reportedly occurred at the dangerous Kenjala curve.

Anjanamma (47), a resident of Keresandramane in Chikkaballapur taluk, died on the spot in the accident. Five-year-old Nayanika sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to hospital.

The injured have been identified as Narasimhayya, V. Manjunath, V. Gangadhara, Pavitra, Siripriya and Ratnamma, who are currently undergoing treatment. Lokesh Devanahalli, Pavan of Somanahalli in Kanakapura, Kavitha C.M., Jeevan, Asha, Preetham and Shiva escaped without serious injuries.

The group of pilgrims had reportedly travelled from Devanahalli and were returning after visiting the pilgrimage centres of Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya.

The body of the deceased has been kept at the Kadaba Community Health Centre. Kadaba police visited the spot, conducted an inspection and registered a case.

Locals have expressed concern over the Kenjala curve on the Gundya–Subrahmanya road, stating that it has become a dangerous accident-prone stretch with frequent mishaps being reported.

Overspeeding, the hazardous design of the curve and driver fatigue caused by long-distance travel are said to be the major reasons for accidents in the area. Residents and commuters have urged the concerned authorities to implement safety measures on the state highway, which witnesses heavy movement of pilgrim vehicles.
