YadiminMangalore, May 26: CM B. S. Yeddyurappa, who had arrived at Mangalore to participate in the 60th birthday celebrations of V. Dhananjay Kumar, the former union minister, made a quick visit to the Venoor, the picturesque temple town.

Realizing the potential of developing Venoor as a popular pilgrim centre, the CM announced a special grant of Rs. 2 crore for its development. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the government will extend all support for the success of the Mahamastakabhisheka, which is scheduled to be held in 2012. He also said that special care will be taken to conserve the statue of Bahubali, adding that the cost of the scaffolding will be borne by the government during this event.

He also said that a dam will be constructed over River Phalguni in Venoor to supply clean drinking water to the villages in and around Venoor.

Padmaprasad, the descendant of the royal family that once ruled Venoor, delivered the felicitation address. Charukirti Bhattaraka Swamiji of Moodubidri, Deputy Speaker N. Yogish Bhat, MP D. V. Sadananda Gowda, MLC Captain Ganesh Karnik, and many others participated in this event.

Venoor, a Jain pilgrim centre, is several centuries old, its chief attraction being a 38-foot Bahubali statue, carved out of a single piece of rock, and several basadis.
The River Phalguni, which later becomes Gurupura River, originates at Venoor.
