Revealing that schools have started assigning grades to students instead of marks, he said that this is a great way of imparting quality education. The schools are also giving special training in Kannada and English to backward students to improve their grammar and spelling, he said.

All government, aided, and non-aided schools will henceforth give importance to health, owing to which health clubs will be started in high schools under the leadership of a science teacher,  a doctor, and a physical trainer, he said.

Currently, 75 lakh students per day are availing of the mid-day meal scheme in Karnataka, and the salaries for the cook and the assistant cook have been raised from Rs. 600 to Rs. 1,500 from last Dec, he informed. Since aided schools have also applied for the mid-day meal scheme, the state will provide rice and other essentials if the schools provide salaries for the cook, he said.

The minister also said that the schools will distribute books among the students, and the books for 2011 will be distributed by March. The government will also organize educational trips for the students, he added.

MLA N. Yogesh Bhat was also present at the press meet.
