Former SL Cricket Captain Duleep Mendis inaugurates Yendurance Zone

Mangalore, Feb 19: Duleep Mendis, the former CEO of Shri Lanka Cricket and former captain of Shri Lanka Cricket Team, inaugurated the brand new Yendurance Zone, an indoor sports complex at Yenepoya University in Deralakatte on Feb 19, Saturday.

In his inaugural speech, he expressed his desire to see India play against Shri Lanka in the finals of World Cup 2011. A talented batsman who was at the heights of his career from 1982 – 85, he said that cricket is a game of luck as well as skill. Explaining his statement, he said that although Shri Lanka won the World Cup 1996 under the leadership of Arjun Ranathunga, the same team could not even enter the second rounds of World Cup 1999. He also expressed his appreciation of the new sports complex at Yenepoya University.


The guest of honor was Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh. In his address, he said that the brand new indoor sports complex is Yenepoya Institutions’ gift to talented sportspersons.

Prominent sports personalities, including Badminton champion Aravind Bhat, graced the event with their presence. Yenepoya University Chancellor Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi presided over the event. In his presidential address, he urged students to utilize all the facilities available to maximize potential in sports. He also said that the institution has experienced basketball and football coaches.


Islamic Academy of Education Secretary Dr. Akthar Hussain delivered the welcome address and Yenepoya Farhad proposed the vote of thanks. Cultural programmes also formed part of the event.


Yendurance Zone, which covers an area of 34,000sq.ft and a 100ft span roof minus truss, can seat 2,500 people. Originally an auditorium, this sports complex now has Taraflex sports flooring, as prescribed by the World Badminton and Basketball Federation, sophisticated audio equipment, and lighting facilities for different types of events.


The basement of the sports complex features a 2,500sq.ft. gymnasium with Precor gym equipment and a 130-seat movie theatre with sound system and digital projection.


The stadium also has a basketball court, a table tennis court, a squash court, a volleyball court, and 3 badminton courts with provisions for 3 sports events to take place simultaneously. The complex also offers facilities for chess, football, darts, carom, and so on.
