Former Congress MP from Kasargod, I. Ram Rai passes away

Mangalore, Dec. 02: Former Kasaragod MP and Congress leader I. Ram Rai died in a private hospital in Mangalore on Thursday, December 2. He was 82.


Mr. Rama Rai, who had represented the Kasaragod Parliament constituency in 1984, died in a private hospital at 7.30 p.m. He had been brought to the hospital on November 15 with old age-related ailments. He had abstained from being actively involved in politics for the past few years due to ill-health. His body would be taken to his house at Ichilambadi, Kumbala near Kasaragod.
Mr. Rama Rai was an active member of the Congress I and was a well respected personality of  Kasargod in Kerala state. He was a member of the AICC, Ececutive member of the KPCC and former vice president of KPCC.


Mr. Rama Rai was born in an agrarian family in Ichilambady, Kumbala, Kasargod District, Kerala. Ram Rai bears the credit of being the first Congress candidate to defeat CPM candidate E. K. Balanandan in the Kasargod Lok Sabha constituency in 1984. He was MP till 1989. 


Rama Rai was the managing trustee of Delampadi Mahalingeshwara and Karinje Mahalingeshwara temples. 


He is survived by wife, two daughters, and two sons. His son, Subbaiya Rai, is the present DCC, general Secretary. He is the son in law of former CPI(M) MP, Mr. Ramanna Rai.


Funeral will take place in Ichilambadi tomorrow, December 3.
