Udupi, February 25, 2024: The initial instance of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), commonly known as ’monkey fever’, has been verified in Udupi district at Kenchanur near Vandse village in Kundapura taluk.

According to the District Health Officer (DHO), Dr. P I Gaddad, a 58-year-old woman has contracted the disease and is presently undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The DHO has initiated awareness campaigns among the residents residing near the edges of the forest in the Western Ghats.

"Many women from these villages venture into the forest for firewood collection. They have been educated about preventive measures upon their return from the forest," stated the DHO.

Although no monkey deaths have been reported in the KFD-affected area, the DHO mentioned a few instances of monkey deaths recently recorded in Hebri.

The DHO urged people not to disregard any form of fever and to seek medical consultation promptly. "Failure to address fever promptly can complicate treatment significantly. Cleaning of cattle sheds in suspected areas has been carried out, along with the implementation of tick prevention measures," added the DHO.
