The deceased have been identified as Padmavathi (37), wife of Harish Naik and Hithesh (28) a tractor driver of Sullia. An illicit relationship is suspected to be the cause of the murder. The duo was murdered brutally using a pick axe.
The suspected killer Vasanth Sherigar (35) of Kantamangala in Ajjavar village, who was staying in that house on Saturday night and was said to be having an affair with the deceased Padmavathi, is absconding.
It is learnt, Harish who worked as a cook, had plans to construct a new house and accordingly, works of leveling the land using a JCB had begun on Saturday. Even a tractor of Hithesh was summoned to dispose the mud. Accordingly, the works had continued until midnight and all the workers had slept after having chicken curry for dinner.
If some workers chose to sleep inside the tractor, Harish and a few others slept on the verandah, while Harish’s wife Padmavathi, their children Gowrishanker, Suresh and also the tractor driver Hithesh and one acquaintance Vasanth had reportedly slept inside the house.
