Documentation vital for research on ’bhutaaradhane’ in digital age: Prof. Vivek Rai

Mangaluru, Dec 21, 2025: Emphasising the growing importance of documentation in the digital era, retired Vice-Chancellor Prof. B. A. Vivek Rai said that systematic recording has become crucial in research on daivaaradhane (spirit worship) and bhutaaradhane. He was speaking after releasing the book “Bhutaaradhane: Maayada Nade Jogada Nudi”, authored by folklorist Prof. K. Chinnappa Gowda, at a programme held on Saturday.

The event was organised by the Coastal Women Writers and Readers Association, Giliwindu of the Kannada Studies Department of Mangalore University, Ranga Sangati Cultural Foundation, and the Department of Kannada, St Aloysius College.

Prof. Vivek Rai observed that the advent of digital media has led to the circulation of incomplete and often misleading information about deities, with individuals presenting their interpretations as final. He cautioned young researchers against accepting such information uncritically, stressing that research demands thorough preparation and careful attention at every stage. In the context of daivaaradhane, he said, this sensitivity is especially vital. He also noted that debates continue over the usage of the terms bhutaaradhane and daivaaradhane, and said researchers may adopt these terms as appropriate while documenting their studies.

Critic Rajashekhar Halemane reviewed the book on the occasion. Renowned daiva dancer Shekhar Parava of Kapumajalu was felicitated. Ashwath S. L., co-founder of the Creative Education Foundation, presided over the programme. Nagappagowda R., president of the SVP Kannada Studies Institute, Mangalore University, was also present.
