Dharmasthala: Police book Girish Mattannavar and others for obstructing the arrest of Mahesh Shetty Thimarody

Belthangady, Aug 23, 2025: The Belthangady Police have booked activists Girish Mattannavar, T. Jayanth and others for the offences of unlawful assembly, criminal intimidation against police officers and obstructing the police from performing their lawful duty on Friday (August 22, 2025).

Brahmavar Police Sub-Inspector Ashok Malabagi in his complaint to the Belthangady police on August 21, said that Mr. Mattannavar and others obstructed his team when the police went to arrest activist Mahesh Shetty Thimarody for his defiance of repeated notices to appear before the police in connection with a case of alleged derogatory comments against a BJP leader. The accused, the PSI said, assembled more people at Mr. Thimarody’s residence in Ujire and used force to deter the police from discharging their official duty. Further, the accused threatened the police of posting defamatory messages against them on social media.

After the arrest, Mr. Thimarody refused to travel by police vehicle from Belthangady to Brahmavar and boarded a private vehicle. During this time, the people gathered at his residence followed the police convoy in 10 to 15 vehicles and continued to obstruct the official duty, the PSI said in his complaint.

Accordingly, the Belthangady police have registered cases of using criminal force against a public servant to prevent them from carrying out duty; unlawful assembly; criminal intimidation and intentional resistance or obstruction to the lawful apprehension of another person under the provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are investigating.
