Dakshina Kannada–Udupi: Heavy rain with thunder and lightning disrupts normal life

Dakshina Kannada–Udupi, Dec 04, 2025: Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed several parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on the evening of December 3, disrupting normal life. The downpour caused traffic snarls and power outages in many areas.

According to the India Meteorological Department, a low-pressure area has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coast. Due to the resulting drop in air pressure, rains began along the Karnataka coast. Bantwal, Beltangady, Kadirudyavara, Mangaluru, Puttur, Nintikallu, Badagannur, Balnadu, Uppinangady, Kadaba, Sullia, Subrahmanya, Vittal and Manila villages experienced showers accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds.

In Sullia taluk, a lightning strike on an acacia tree triggered panic among the staff nearby. Heavy rain led to waterlogging on the Mani–Mysuru highway near Jalsoor, causing temporary disruption to vehicular movement. Continuous rain was reported from Sampaje, Aranthodu, Jalsoor, Mandekolu, Bellare, Nintikallu, Panja, Gutthigar and Kollamogru.

In Udupi district, although the day remained dry, rain began in the evening and continued for an hour. Moderate to heavy rainfall was reported from Udupi city, Manipal, Malpe, Katapady, Kaup, Karkala, Hebri, Brahmavar, Kundapur and Siddapur. Afternoon rain led to temporary power cuts in parts of Karkala rural areas, and in some areas of Siddapur, dried arecanut got wet again, causing inconvenience to farmers.

As per the IMD forecast, widespread rainfall is likely to continue across coastal Karnataka on Thursday.
