Kasargod, Dec 6, 2013: The quantum of punishment to the convicts in the Talangere double murder case will be announced by the District Sessions Court on December 7.
The murders had taken place on February 27, 1998. Beepathima (59) and her maid Selvi(16) from Talangere Khasilane were smothered to death that day. However, the gruesome murders came to the notice of the outside world only three days later when locals informed the police after foul smell began to emanate from the house.
The Kasargod police who initially probed the case could not make much headway into the investigation, forcing the authorities to entrust the case to the Kannur Crime Branch.
The killers belonging to the notorious Dandupalya gang were arrested in Bangalore nine years after the murders.
Those arrested are Dodda Hanuma (48) of Dandupalya in Bangalore, Venkatesha alias Chandra (45), his wife Savitri(43), Munikrishna alias Krishna (41), his wife Padma(40), Nallatimma alias Timma (41) of Mysore, Venkatesh alias Ramesh (43) and Krishna alias Chandra(35). They were wanted in connection with several dacoity cases. They also confessed their crime during interrogation.
Police later on even seized the stolen jewellery which the accused had sold to a jewellery shop at Dharwad. The Sessions Court which conducted the hearing into the case, had heard a total of 52 witnesses which helped in nailing the culprits.
