Cops crack burglary case: Relative arrested for stealing valuables worth lakhs

Udupi, Aug 24, 2023: Police have arrested a man in the case of theft of jewellery and cash worth Rs 8 lakhs from the house of Anitha D’Silva at Udyavar Bolje.

 

 

 

 

The accused is John Prajwal Fernandes (32) who is a relative of Anitha. Police seized jewellery worth Rs 6,90,713 apart from cash and a motorcycle from him.

The theft had occurred on August 17 when Anitha had been to work and her son to school. Anitha’s daughter had left home in the afternoon for computer class. When the family returned home in the evening the theft had come to light. The thieves had broken open the locker of the cupboard in the bedroom. A complaint was then lodged in Kaup police station.

The accused John Prajwal used to often visit Anitha’s house and police grew suspicious. He was intercepted and questioned when police found receipts of pledging gold. The police recovered the gold which he had pledged in various finance companies, jewellery stores and co-operative societies.

Police said the accused was an alcoholic and was also into gambling and was in debt.
