Con men fooling women, decamping with jewels : suspect caught on CCTV Camera

Mangalore, Mar 25, 2013 :  Thieves are on the prowl in Mangalore and are targeting women and their jewellery. The four cases reported in DK and Udupi on Friday and Saturday, wherein women have been robbed of gold by men posing as CBI officials and police, call for more caution on the part of the public, particularly women. Meanwhile, the police who could get the image  of one of the suspects  from the CCTV of Infosys, has released the same to the media, and has asked the public to inform police control room by calling (0824) 2220555 if they have any particulars regarding the whereabouts of the thieves.


thief 1If one incident was reported from Kottara on March 22, Friday another incident took place  at Kodialbail VT Road and Ballalbagh on March 23.


In the incident reported on Saturday morning, two strangers who approached Sumathi (60) who was on her way to Canara School to give lunch box to her grandson, was told that one Sharada teacher has been killed and that they were policemen in mufti .


They also advised her not to wear gold while passing through the area. Soon a third man, possibly an accomplice, arrived and removed his gold chain and placed it in his pocket. Sumathi believing them took off her gold chain weighing 2 sovereigns and two gold bangles each weighing one and a half sovereigns and placed it on the paper held out by one of the men.

They rolled it and gave it back to her and she placed it securely in her bag. As the strangers walked off, Sumathi grew suspicious and checked the paper and to her shock found imitation jewellery inside.
Bunder police have registered a case.


Even in Ballalbagh, one Bhavani (70) lost her chain and two gold bangles in a similar fashion.A  case has been registered  in Barke station.


In an incident that took place on Friday near Infosys at Kottara, a woman named Leela Karanth had lost her valuables worth Rs 1.4 lakhs. In his case, the image  of one of the suspects, is safe in the CCTV footage of Infosys and has been released to the Press by the police.


The police have asked women to be cautious  and not to  fall victim to such traps laid by thieves.
