Compensation to families of Covid victims : Ivan seeks clarity

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Aug 02, 2021: AICC Secretary and former MLC Ivan D’Souza has threatened to move the court if the district administration fails to furnish information as to how many are eligible for the Rs one lakh compensation announced by the state government for the families of those who died of Covid.

Speaking to reporters here on August 2, Monday, Ivan said though the government had announced the compensation  some time ago, there has been no instruction to the district administration. Even death audit has not been done, he said.

Pointing out that  40-50 people are  succumbing to Covid in the district every week, he said  the deaths would not have been high if all were vaccinated. Even infection cases are rising, the Health Department is not providing exact information as to how many are vaccinated. Even 25% of the eligible populace has not been vaccinated even after four months, he alleged.

Expressing his concern over rising positivity rate in the district, Ivan said while vaccines are unavailable at government centres,  any number of doses are available at private hospitals for around Rs 800. "The BJP must remove the hoardings mentioning  "Free vaccinations for all," he said.

Pointing out that at least one dose of vaccination has been made mandatory for students to attend colleges,  he said as of now only around 63,000 students out of the 1.10 college students are vaccinated.
