Mangalore, Dec 29: Releasing crime statistics at a press conference held in his office on Dec 29, Wednesday, Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that the Mangalore commissionerate, which was launched on Jan 26, 2010, started functioning from June 6, 2010.

He said that there were 11 murder cases in 2008, 32 in 2009, and 19 in 2010 and that there were 34 robbery cases in 2008, 28 in 2009, and 23 in 2010. He also said that 4 cases of dacoity were reported in 2010 compared to the 3 in 2009. 


Stating that the number of accidents has decreased compared to the previous 2 years, he said that there were 1064 accident cases were reported in 2008 and that 841 cases were reported in 2010. He said that the decrease is because of the fines strictly imposed on drivers caught for speed and drunken driving. 


Stating that death rates have increased in places such as Mulky, Moodubidri, and Suratkal, he said that 130 deaths were reported in 2008, 130 in 2009, and 154 in 2010. The number of riot cases was 168 in 2008, 105 in 2009, and 199 in 2010. The number of theft cases was 158 in 2008, 212 in 2009, and 199 in 2010. The percentage of vehicle thefts has risen, he said. 


Informing that the traffic department has undertaken a number of measures for Dec 31, 2010, he said that the department will take stern action against drivers caught for drunken driving. Although people are free to celebrate the New Year, they are not allowed to do so by driving in a drunken state. Besides, the taxi association has also been informed about this matter because around 32 deaths were reported due to drunken driving in 2010. 


Regarding election security measures, he said that Mangalore has 299 polling booths, of which 28 have been identified as hyper sensitive, 78 as partially sensitive, and 203 as less dangerous. A total of 25 striking mobile squads, 3 DCPs, and 2 ACPs will supervise security situations, he said, adding that around 300 police personnel have been deployed for the purpose. 


Regarding the Hindu Samajotsav, Singh said that the matter has been discussed with various community leaders and requests have been made to maintain peace and order. A total of 2000 police officers have been deployed besides policemen from the commissionerate. The organizers of this mega event say that 50,000 people are expected to participate.
