Bolur Daiva Nartana row: Performer confirmed as Hindu, documents released to refute claims

Mangaluru, Mar 19, 2026: A controversy surrounding the performance of daiva nartana (Nema) in Bolur has taken a new turn, with members of the Pambada community asserting that the performer in question is a Hindu and not a Christian, as alleged earlier.

Addressing a press conference, daiva performer Sooraj Chipparu refuted claims made by Dr. Rati during a media interaction on March 13. Dr. Rati had alleged that traditional daiva nartana services—typically performed by around 16 designated communities including Pambada and Panara—had been violated when a youth, claimed to be born to a Christian mother, performed the ritual at the Jarandaya Daivasthana in Bolur.

Dismissing the allegation, Chipparu stated that they possess valid caste and identity documents proving that the performer, Sushanth Bangera, is a Hindu belonging to the Pambada community.

He further clarified that while it is true that a member of their community, Ganesh Padavinangady, had married a Christian woman, she had embraced Hindu customs and traditions after marriage. “When a woman adopts another faith and follows its customs, she becomes part of that community. Targeting her on this basis is unjust,” he said.

Chipparu added that Ganesh married as per Hindu traditions, and their son Sushanth was raised accordingly. “All legal documents, including caste certificates, have already been obtained as per law,” he noted.

Speaking on the occasion, Ganesh Pambada emphasized that no disrespect was caused to the community’s traditions or the sanctity of daiva aradhane. “The ritual at Jarandaya Daivasthana in Bolur was conducted with utmost devotion and in accordance with divine sanction, without any lapses,” he said.

Ganesh also highlighted his 31 years of experience performing daiva nartana across several regions including Kumble, Vitla, Koliyoor, Manjeshwar, Kurnadu, and Harekal-Pavoor. “I have upheld the dignity of our community and will continue to offer my services wherever devotees invite me,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sushanth Bangera expressed distress over being labeled as a Christian. “I have been insulted by such claims. Those who made these allegations should publicly apologize. Their actions are affecting my future and making it difficult for me to continue performing,” he said.

Others present at the press conference included Ganesh Kaje, Kamalaksha Pambada Gandhakadu, Savita, and several community members.
