Mangalore, Oct 18, 2011: One person died and three others were injured when fire broke out at the site of the under construction  crude oil storage tank in the third phase MRPL expansion project at Kuttethur at 11:45 a.m. on Oct 18 Thursday.

The deceased is Munna Kumar of Orissa, who worked as a welder. He died of burns sustained when he was doing welding work inside the tank.

Jayappa and Arjun Maruthi Saben, who rushed Rahim, one of the injured to a hospital, said that one of the sparks landed on the paint and immediately caught fire leading to the blast.

A. R. Zhadke, who is in charge of the site, said at the Suratkal police station that it was not a blast, but fire that was caused when a spark fell into the paint. He said that Munna Kumar died on the spot.

He also said that the father of the deceased was also present because he too is employed on the site.

The other workers were alerted when they saw smoke rising up from the top of the tank; however, when the officials reached the place, Munna was already dead.

The other injured were rushed to Padmavathi Hospital. Later, Rahim was shifted to AJ Hospital because he had multiple burn injuries while the other two Uday Kumar of Gulbarga and Pappu Mahotha of West Bengal were taken to Fr. Muller Hospital.

An FIR is yet to be filed.
