Manipal, Sep 28, 2012: The Basheer Puraskaram 2012 was conferred on U. R. Ananthamurthy at an award ceremony organized by Manipal University and Pravasi Doha on Thursday.

In his acceptance address, the litterateurs said that Basheer is an important Indian writer, who must be discussed all over India. Speaking about the value of Basheer’s work, he said that Basheer’s writings though humorous, have great depth.
M. T. Vasudevan Naik, Jnanapeetha award winner, presented the award and said that writer Basheer lives through his writings.
Revealing details about the life of Basheer, columnist T. J. S. George said that he was a poor, illiterate wandered, who also spent some time in jail and in the mental asylum, in spite of which he reached the heights of literary success. Since he was illiterate, he could use words in a unique way, ignoring basic rules of grammar. Speaking of the similarity between Basheer and M. F. Hussain, he said that both were unconventional Muslims. Though uneducated, both were educated in the University of Life.
The award also comprises an endowment scholarship of Rs. 15,000, given in honor of Prof. M. N. Vijayan, scholar and critic. This scholarship was conferred on Abhishek, a student of Tudur Government High School in Shimoga
