Bajpe Police arrests bank clerk accused of stealing gold

Mangalore, Dec 20, 2011: The Bajpe police have arrested a person who allegedly stole gold from a bank locker on Dec 20 Tuesday.

The arrested Dayakar Shetty is employed as a clerk at the Bajpe branch of Vijaya Bank and stands accused of stealing 500gms of gold from a bank locker. The police have confiscated 460gms of gold worth Rs. 13,50,000 from him.

Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh told reporters that Sudhakar Shetty, the DGM of Vijaya Bank, had lodged a complaint at the Bajpe Police Station on Dec 12 that 500gms of gold deposited in a locker by Lawrence Fernandes, Athika Banu, and Mohammed Hussain between Jan 4, 2011 and Nov 5, 2011 had been stolen.

Harishchandra, the branch manager, and Anasuya, the assistant manager, had collected Rs. 3,75,000 from their personal accounts and had given it to the customers to save the reputation of the bank.

The police team involved in the case comprised Inspector Dinakar Shetty, SI Ananth Murudeshwar, Assistant SIs K. Sitaram Gowda and Shankar Nayari, H. C. Prakash Murthy, Rajesh, PC Rama, Basavaraj, Sathish, Jabbar, Santhosh, and driver Balachandra. The operation was directed by Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, Assistant Commissioner Puttamadayya, and DCP Dharmaiah.
