Anti-naxal squad nab leader of banned CIP Maoist group

Udupi, Dec 2, 2010: Acting upon reliable tips regarding banned CPI (Maoist) organizations in the forest areas of Udupi, the Anti Naxal Squad organized anti-naxal operations in the area and arrested Shekar alias Ranjith alias Ravi alias Prem (25) from the forests of Basavanpalu in Yedammoge Village on Dec 1, Wednesday.

Alok Mohan, the inspector general of police (western range), told reporters that the arrested revealed himself to be the Madurai area commander of the banned CPI (Maoist) organization. The Tamil Nadu police had fixed a reward of Rs. 1 lakh on the arrested, who is the son of Nataraju of Kumaramangalam in Pallipattu in Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu. The police also seized 5 gelatin sticks, 10 detonators, wicks, banned Maoist literature, and medical prescriptions from the arrested.


The Shankernarayana police have registered a case under section 121 (A) of the Indian Penal Code R/W 16 (1) (B) Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and Section 4 and 5 of Explosive Substance Act. The arrested has been produced in the JMFC Court in Kundapur and the police are further investigating the case.


Shekar had arrived at Udupi 45 days back to provide medical assistance and impart field craft training to the underground members of the organizations and to propagate Maoist ideologies. He was also acting as the courier between the TN and Karnataka members of this banned organization.


Two separate cases had been registered against Shekar in TN, one of which is related to sedition and the other under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The police had also placed a Rs. 1 lakh reward on him.


Pravin  Madhukar Pawar, the superintendent of police, was present at the press conference.
