Mangalore, Jan 15, 2012: District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar inaugurated the fifth Nethravathi Phalguni Jodukere Kambala at Pilikula Nisargadhama on Sunday.


The event was organized by the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Kambala Samithi and bears the names of the significant rivers of the twin districts.

Although the event has been organized in February for the past 5 years, it has been organized in January this year to make it part of the attractions of the 17th National Youth Festival (NYF). 


The Kambala, a popular traditional sport of Tulunadu, is held in the 134-metre long field called Bakimaru Gadde, part of the heritage village at Pilikula Nisargadhama. It is located in front of the Guthu Mane, a traditional structure that was refurbished for this occasion. 


Over 135 pairs of buffaloes participated in this event, which was held in categories such as Hagga Hiriya, Kane Halage, Hagga Kiriya, Negilu Hiriya, Negilu Kiriya, and Adda Halage.
A flower exhibition also formed part of this event. 


I. R. Perumal, the principal secretary of the department of youth service and sports, presided over the event. N. S. Channappa Gowda, the DC of DK; Abhay Chandra Jain, the MLA of Mulky and Moodubidri; Rajavarma Ballal, the president of the Karntaka State Bus Owners’ Federation; and many others were also present.
