Members of the family of the four people who were killed by Praveen have decided to write to the senior police authorities opposing any decision to release Praveen.

The Vamanjoor serial murder that shook the district took place on February 23, 1994, Praveen, a resident of Periyadka in Uppinangady had been to his maternal aunt Appi Sherigarti’s house  Vamanjoor but had killed  Appi, her son Govinda, daughter Shakuntala and Shakuntala’s daughter  Deepika with a wooden club while they were sleeping and had escaped with their jewellery.

As the charges against Praveen were proved, he was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court. He had later filed an appeal  to the President of India seeking pardon. However the same has not yet been decided.

Presently Praveen is lodged in the Hindalaga prison in Belagavi.  The District SP office has reportedly received an intimation from the State Prisons and Reforms Department seeking opinion regarding the release of Praveen on grounds of good conduct.

A relative of Appi Sherigarti has said Praveen who had killed four of his own relatives for want of money may pose danger to the society if he was released.
