100-year-old Bunts Hostel Circle demolished

Mangalore, October 6: The Bunts Hostel Circle, which is nearly a century old, was razed down on Tuesday. This Circle was constructed by the Nadavara Mathr Sangha when it is established a century back. Twenty years ago, the circle was given a facelift. Although one of the most significant landmarks of Mangalore, it was causing a lot of problems for the ever-growing volume of traffic in Mangalore.

President of the Federation of World Bunts Association and former president of Bunts Sangha Ajith Kumar Rai Maladi informed reporters of The Times of India that the Bunt community was emotionally attached to the circle; however, they had agreed to its removal to facilitate free flow of traffic.

Stating that the Bunts’ Sangha received requests from the commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), the deputy commissioner, and even police authorities for the removal of the circle and that the association had agreed to their requests because it did not want “sentiments to come in the way of development.” He added that the association had also given up some of its land to facilitate the road-widening project.

Rai also said that he has taken up the responsibility of constructing a new circle at a short distance from the present circle. The designs of this new circle are now being done, he said and added that the association will have to first approve of it before it can be constructed.

The traffic signal that the police had erected near the Pai Sales International showroom has also been removed. Although the police department had installed it to facilitate traffic flow, they could not make it operational.
