Kerala: Woman, parents kill self after marriage called off

Kerala, Jan 16, 2016: A Kerala couple and their daughter committed suicide after her proposed marriage was called off because her classmate allegedly sent indecent messages to her husband-to-be, police said.

Pulikkal Ananthu, a native of Vadakkanchery in Thrissur, was on Friday arrested in connection with the suicide of T Babu, 54, wife Savitha, 45, and their daughter Shilpa, 22, a post-graduate in Commerce.

Police said the three hanged themselves from the ceiling of their house at Puthukkad in Thrissur district on Wednesday evening. A suicide note allegedly written by Shilpa has been found, officers said.

According to the police, Shilpa’s marriage was fixed with a youth from Irinjalakkuda in Thrissur. However, Ananthu, her classmate, messaged her photographs to the man.

Some of these pictures were selfies taken during their college days. He also sent him provocative messages and threatened to circulate Shilpa’s obscene pictures if he did not call off the marriage, said investigating officer N Muraleedharan.

No compromising pictures have been found on either Shilpa or Ananthu’s phones, police said. Ananthu has told the police that he was in love with Shilpa but her family was opposed to the match because she belonged to the Hindu Ezhava caste, while he hailed from an SC family.

Ananthu has been charged with abetting the suicides and remanded in judicial custody. He is also facing charges under the relevant sections of the IT Act.
