Bengaluru, Mar 27, 2023: Hours after his bail plea was dismissed by the Karnataka High Court, BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa was arrested by the Lokayukta police on Monday in connection with a bribery case relating to Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL).
Virupakshappa, who was the chairman of KSDL, has been charged with demanding bribes for allotting a contract for supplying chemicals to KSDL, through his son Prashanth Madal, a Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) officer.
After a demand for Rs 81 lakh bribe to pass a bill was made, Virupakshappa’s son was caught in his office accepting Rs 40 lakh from a supplier of raw materials. Subsequently, over Rs. 7 crore in cash was seized from Virupakshappa’s residence.
The BJP MLA, who is the prime accused in the case, was earlier granted pre-arrest bail by the High Court on a Rs 5 lakh personal bond which helped him escape arrest.
Meanwhile, his son, Prashanth was arrested in the case on March 2. Four more arrests have been made by the Lokayukta police in the case since then.
