Thiruvanantapuram, Jan 20, 2022: Further restrictions in Kerala in the wake of the spike in Covid-19 cases will be decided on Thursday, January 20, at a high level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. A lockdown, however, is unlikely.

Since the CM is in the US seeking treatment, he will attend the meeting online. In the cabinet meeting convened on Wednesday, health minister Veena George informed the cabinet that while the spike in cases is high, the number of hospitalisations is less.

The possible measures that could be implemented include shutting down colleges, weekend curfews and night curfews. Further restrictions on public meetings can also be expected.

Meanwhile, revenue minister K Rajan also confirmed that there will be no complete shut down.

“The government doesn’t have the approach where we shut down even before covid starts. We will only handle it scientifically. The third wave is dangerous with over five districts having TPR above 40. Government will implement measures to ensure that there is no uncontrollable spike. However, that doesn’t mean a complete lockdown," said the minister.

Kerala, on Wednesday, January 19, recorded 34,199 fresh positive cases. It is soon expected to hit a daily tally of 50,000.
