New Delhi, Oct 17, 2025: The Central Government informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that the execution of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen has currently been put on hold and that no adverse developments are taking place in the case at the moment.
During the hearing of a petition seeking the repatriation of Nimisha Priya from Yemen, a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta inquired about the current status of the death penalty case involving the Indian nurse.
Responding on behalf of the Centre, Attorney General R. Venkataramani stated that the death sentence has been stayed. However, he also mentioned that there has been no significant progress in the matter. Negotiations are ongoing, and a new mediator has recently entered the picture to help facilitate discussions.
Lawyers representing the organization Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, which is providing legal support to Nimisha, also confirmed that the execution has been halted for now. They added that the positive aspect is that there are currently no active legal proceedings being carried out against her.
Previously, the Grand Mufti of India had initiated talks regarding Nimisha’s release. Now, a new individual is in discussions with the Yemeni authorities. The legal team suggested that the petition could be deferred for the time being.
Subsequently, the court scheduled the next hearing for January 2026, adding that the petition could be taken up earlier if an urgent situation arises.
