New Delhi, Mar 28, 2026: The White House has responded to reports about a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Iran war. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the two leaders had a “productive conversation" and noted that President Trump shares a strong relationship with Prime Minister Modi.
“President Trump has a great relationship with Prime Minister Modi, and this was a productive conversation," said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to PTI.
Elon Musk joins leaders on call
According to The New York Times, billionaire Elon Musk also joined the call on Tuesday. His presence marked an unusual moment, as a private citizen took part in a discussion between two heads of state during a wartime situation. US officials confirmed Musk’s participation but said it is not clear why he was included or whether he spoke during the call.
This was the first conversation between Trump and Modi since the West Asia conflict began on 28 February. The discussion focused on the rising tensions in the Gulf region.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said both leaders spoke about the evolving situation and stressed the need to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
Focus on Strait of Hormuz
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of the Strait of Hormuz remaining open, secure and accessible. He said this is essential for global peace, stability and economic well-being.
In a post, PM Modi described the exchange as “useful" and said India supports de-escalation and the early restoration of peace. Both sides agreed to remain in touch in efforts to ensure stability.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key global oil route, carrying around 20 per cent of the world’s crude shipments. Any disruption could affect energy markets and economies worldwide, including India.
Musk’s presence raises questions
The report said Musk’s inclusion suggests he may have improved relations with President Trump after a public fallout last year. The two had clashed after Musk left his government role, where he was overseeing efforts to reduce the federal workforce.
Their disagreement was linked to the administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which focused on tax cuts, deregulation and border security. Since then, both sides have attempted to repair ties.
However, neither the US nor Indian governments mentioned Musk’s participation in official statements or briefings. His presence remains unexplained.
The report also noted that Musk has business interests in the region and is looking to expand in India, where approvals for ventures such as satellite internet services are still pending.
